RISE-UP student Yesenia Rivera participated in the NOAA CESSRST Summer Bridge program in summer 2020. In order to study concentration changes after the COVID-19 shutdown in Puerto Rico, her research included a coast section from the municipalities of San Juan and Ponce. Remote sensing techniques were used to quantify levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and air and water quality parameters. The results indicate that in San Juan there was a decrease in CDOM concentration and a drastically drop of NO₂ level in mid-March of. 2020, which can be linked to the COVID-19 shutdown that began in March 15, 2020 in Puerto Rico.
