RISE-UP student Yesenia Rivera participated in the NOAA CESSRST Summer Bridge program in summer 2020. In order to study concentration changes after the COVID-19 shutdown in Puerto Rico, her research included a coast section from the municipalities of San Juan and Ponce. Remote sensing techniques were used to quantify levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and air and water quality parameters. The results indicate that in San Juan there was a decrease in CDOM concentration and a drastically drop of NO2 level in mid-March of. 2020, which can be linked to the COVID-19 shutdown that began in March 15, 2020 in Puerto Rico.

A poster about her research findings is available here.
