“VILLAS PESQUERAS” – A documentary film by Claudia Crespo

The Architectural graduate student of UPRRP Claudia Crespo, wrote and produced a short documentary film titled “Villas Pesqueras”, which composed the research and theoretical arguments for her master’s dissertation: “Villas Pesqueras of Puerto Rico: Documenting the Coastal Culture from the Architectural Discourse”. Her thesis argues that ‘Villas Pesqueras’ and fishers are crucial pieces for the identity and the coastal culture of Puerto Rico.
“After the thesis defense, my thesis committee, composed of Dr. Regner Ramos –thesis
director–, Fabiola Guzmán, and Kleanthis Kyriakou –consultants–, encouraged me to submit the project to architectural competitions and film festivals. Recently, I received the amazing news that the film has been selected in five local and international film festivals. The film is now part of the “Official Selection” of the International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival, International World Film Awards, Vieques Film and Human Rights Festival and the Isabela International Film Festival. It has also been awarded “Semi-Finalist” at the Venice Architecture Film Festival, in which it has been selected top 20 of all the participating films.
For me, this is a huge accomplishment because while researching these communities,
filmmaking was adopted as a research method to portray the story of these spaces while acknowledging the fishers’ opinions. With these awards, not only is the research being acknowledged, but most importantly the stories of this marginalized community are being shared with the world outside of the academia.” – Claudia Crespo.
Additional to these achievements, Crespo was given the AIA student honor award on October 16th this year and her short documentary film was chosen as part of the “Official Selection” of the Barcelona Film and Human Rights Festival.
