RISE-UP Students Present Paper at LACCEI Conference

RISE-UP students Laura Garcia Canto and Elmer Irizarry coauthored a paper that was presented at the 18th LACCEI International Multi-Conference for Engineering, Education, and Technology. In the paper they discuss how they were able to use the training acquired in RISE-UP in a real-life, post-disaster situation. After the January 2020 earthquakes, they participated in visual inspection brigades, where they aided professional engineers and faculty members in data collection and categorizing building damages on campus. The students stated that witnessing firsthand the complexities of assessing infrastructure damage during and following high seismic activity enhanced their awareness of the significance of their profession in ensuring the safety of others both immediately after an earthquake and in the face of future disasters.
