The Civil Engineering and RISE-UP students Laura García Canto and Elmer Irizarry received the “Best Overall Student Poster” recognition at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) – Southeastern Section annual conference held March 8-9 in Auburn, Alabama. The poster is titled “Enhancing Student Preparedness through Experiential Learning: Lessons Learned from Assessing Building Structural Damages after Earthquakes”. In the poster, the students first briefly discuss the material covered in the ARQU/INCI 4147 Fundamentals of Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructure course and the site visits that were part of the course. Then, they discuss its application in a real-life post-disaster situation. Lastly, they discuss the lessons learned and reflect on the experience. The students indicated that they witnessed firsthand the complexities of assessing infrastructure damage during and after an intense seismic event. This experience enhanced their awareness of the significance of the engineering and architecture professions in ensuring the safety of the public both immediately after an earthquake and in the face of future events.
