Casa AMPARO

Students from the Intermediate Architectural Design Studio were awarded Honorable Mention in the category of ‘Student Work’ by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Puerto Rico Chapter,  for the Casa AMPARO project, which arose from the need for accommodation and housing after  hurricanes Irma and María.

Students involved (from left to right): Wesley González Colón, Suzette López Ramos, Margaret Sobrino Almánzar, Humberto Cavallin (professor), Zairiangely García Planas, Margarita Sánchez Hernández, Neishaly Rivera Cruz and Jean M. Santos Pantoja

After studying damages in the Piñones community due to hurricanes Irma and Maria and housing construction practices in Puerto Rico, this model was developed with the purpose that it could be used as an annex and/or repair existing homes.

To be cost-efficient, a limit of $ 25 per square foot was established if it were to be built by people from the community and $ 50 if skilled personnel were hired. Also, following the regulations for safe housing in Puerto Rico, the materials were selected for their availability and easy access.

Two housing models were developed, although it can be expanded or modified to the needs of each case.

AMPARO V-1: 128 square feet with no kitchen or toilet facilities

AMPARO-V2: 640 square feet with dining room, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms
