Participants of the RISE-UP program visit the UPRRP School of Architecture

As part of the activities of the interdisciplinary project Resilient Infrastructure and Sustainability Education – Undergraduate Program (RISE-UP), the students participating in the program met at the School of Architecture of the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras (UPRRP), where they participated in a series of lectures throughout the day that ranged from microbiological aspects to digital design and manufacturing in infrastructure development. The conference, which took place last Saturday, November 23, 2019, began with the conference Aerobiology of Environments and Interiors presented by Dr. Benjamín Bolaños, professor of the Department of microbiology and zoology of the Medical Sciences Campus. During the presentation, the impact of fungi and spores on buildings was discussed, as well as the seasons that favor their spread. Then, Rafael Vargas, Director of the Digital Fabrication Laboratory (FABLAB) spoke about the point of view of digital manufacturing design and methods, thus presenting several examples.
Later, during the afternoon section, the students had the opportunity to listen to a lecture given by professor Humberto Cavallin, professor at the UPRRP, followed by a session in which professor Marcelo Suárez shared on the subject of materials and their reusability . At the end of the presentation, a group dynamic was carried out in which the students were able to develop with their respective work teams an idea in which they could give a new functionality to some material. At the end of the exercise, the groups presented their ideas to their partners, thus giving the opportunity for each other to ask questions and provide suggestions to other teams.
This activity represents the last visit of the semester to one of the three campuses involved in the initiative, focused on offering students from different disciplines education in resilient and sustainable infrastructure from an interdisciplinary approach.
