XAYMARA HERNÁNDEZ GONZÁLEZ

Xaymara Hernandez Gonzalez is a 3rd year M.S. student at the University of Puerto Rico-Medical Sciences Campus. She completed her bachelor’s degree in Microbiology at the University of Puerto Rico-Humacao Campus. During her undergraduate studies, she had the opportunity to investigate isolating antimicrobial producing bacteria under the mentorship of Dr. Villafañe and identifying nitrifying bacteria with the guidance of Dr. Fuentes. In 2018, she was accepted into the Department of Microbiology and Medical Zoology of the University of Puerto Rico-Medical Sciences Campus. Right now, she is completing her thesis investigation in the Mycology and Aerobiology Laboratory of Dr. Benjamin Bolaños-Rosero. Her investigation focused on determining the role fungal spores and pollen may have in the susceptibility to contract Covid-19 in the residents of Caguas and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Also, she collaborates with Dr. Cavallin investigating how built environmental impact fungi concentration within the households. Besides her investigations, she serves as vocal in the Students Microbiology Chapter and the Graduate Student Association of UPR-RCM. Also, Xaymara is the secretary of the Graduate Women in Science Puerto Rico Chapter.
