UP IN THE AIR: Place Attachment and Adaptation Processes of Foreigners College Students

Abstract
As the capitalist system globalizes, it is more common for people to move from one environment to another more than once in their lives. Many studies relate the sense of belonging to a place and mobilization as opposing logics. The relationship between mobility and attachment to the place is fundamental to be able to determine the meaning that is given to a space when moving. For this reason, it will be studied how both are an important part of the adaptation process, in order to know what elements of the physical space allow an individual to adapt easily. To answer this question, a study will be carried out with foreign students from the UPRRP, as well as interviews and field observation throughout the semester. It is hoped that with this work the obstacles that these students encounter can be known and identified, which in turn will allow us to understand how architecture is an important factor in this process. The research findings will be used as input to develop an architectural space that offers and allows foreign students a better process of adaptation to a new environment.

Resumen
A medida que el sistema capitalista se globaliza, es más común que las personas se movilicen de un entorno a otro más de una vez en sus vidas. Muchos estudios relacionan el sentido de pertenencia a un lugar y la movilización como lógicas opuestas. La relación entre movilidad y el apego al lugar es fundamental para poder determinar el significado que se le otorga a un espacio al momento de mudarse. Por esta razón, se estudiará de qué manera ambos son parte importante del proceso de adaptación, a fin de conocer qué elementos del espacio físico le permiten a un individuo adaptarse con facilidad. Para contestar esta pregunta, se estará realizando un estudio con estudiantes extranjeros de la UPRRP, así como entrevistas y observación de campo a lo largo de todo el semestre. Se espera que con este trabajo puedan conocerse e identificarse los obstáculos con los cuales se encuentran estos estudiantes, lo cual a su vez permitirá entender de qué manera la arquitectura es un factor importante dentro de este proceso. Las conclusiones de la investigación serán utilizadas como insumo para desarrollar un espacio arquitectónico que les ofrezca y les permita a estudiantes extranjeros un mejor proceso de adaptación a un nuevo entorno.
